Decorating in Black

Everyone has a favorite color. But, black is a color that everyone is familiar with and thus, it lies within people's comfort zone.

Therefore, it is no surprise to me that decorating in black is a trend that is growing stronger over the last few years. Black (including its inky hues) is moody and has an attitude. When styled with a flair it is luring and polished with a modern edge. It adds drama and a fearless elegance!

I'm not the greatest fan of an all white interior. Yet, I can feel those who hesitate about a noir decor. But let's admit it, black has the aptitude to dress up a room. It invigorates it! It is a showcase of your state of mind. It is a great color for creating the perfect retreat space. Noir is simply magical! I will prove my case to you by presenting several photos.

Elegance and sophistication are the two words that come to mind when looking at this interior!

If you want to use black in only one living space then try it in your sunniest room. Noir is the color of shadows and therefore, the best lighting is plenty of natural sunlight for the right ambiance. At night time use primarily plenty of peripheral ambient lighting rather than a single central one. (A marquee floor lamp or table lamp will stand out in the most amazing way). Lots of lit candles can also add on a huge drama impact. The flooring and ceiling are of great importance to consider. A dark floor is ideal for a library room. A light colored one is superb for living rooms, bedrooms and entryways. A black ceiling might work wonderfully in a home office space.

An exotic courtyard!  The new white design!  Notice the different geometric patterns of the pillows vs the flooring.  A splash of yellow gives it life!

Black accent walls look amazing if done with a textured wallpaper. If that is not within your budget, then consider glossy finish paint instead. In any case, remember that splashes of bright colors and especially golden details (knobs, handles, frames, vases) add on to noir's unbounded sophistication while keeping a balance.

When paired with luxurious materials like mirrors and textured fabrics like velvet the outcome is astonishing. Weave in other colors, especially light ones; but please not just gray! It won't do justice to this style; the effect won't be as strong. Be bold with your decoration for an amazing outcome!

If you are considering remodeling your bathroom and/or kitchen, then it is a great opportunity to give in to a noir decor. Promise, you won't regret it.
